Community events, Fall Fun Fest

Fall Fun Fest on Sunday, Sept. 29, was fabulous! A record Fall Fest crowd of more than 1,500 people came to the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington campus for a warm, sun-filled day. On the upper campus in the morning, the AFRH organized a fun morning that included a classic car show, petting zoo, DJ Billy White and a Model T assembly.

On the lower campus in the afternoon, Friends of the Soldiers Home hosted the PG and the Hot Tips band, food trucks, face painting, Critter Connections and an inflatable obstacle course. Creative Minds International added a bounce house and pumpkin patch, and the Nam Knights directed parking at the front gate.

We at Friends of the Soldiers Home want to give a sincere thanks to everyone who came to this event, and to our sponsors, DCCX, ANC1A, ANC4C, Anheuser Busch and JES Foundation Repair. Above all, we thank the AFRH residents and staff for welcoming the community to their beautiful campus!

The 1,200 people who braved rainy weather for a spirited July 4 celebration at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington weren’t sorry. They enjoyed a great view of the fireworks, a fantastic performance by the Hoke County, N.C. marching band, a fine showing by the Home’s resident DJ Billy White. There were also plenty of games, food and drinks. Friends of the Soldiers Home would like to thank everyone who participated in the great day!

Community events, Fourth of July

More than 2,600 people came to the green open space of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington for a gala July 4th celebration. The seventh annual gathering hosted by Friends of the Soldiers Home featured entertainment by the Hortonville, Wisconsin marching band and two Soldiers Home residents, DJ Billy White and singer/guitarist Waymon Lucas Jr. There was facepainting, a bounce house and pond fishing for kids, who mostly enjoyed running amok on the green expanse of the Home’s grounds. There were many food and drink choices, and of course the highlight was viewing fireworks from the National Mall and the neighborhoods surrounding the Soldiers Home. We can’t wait for July 4, 2019!

Community events, Spring Fling

The sixth annual Spring Fling brought 500 people to the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington campus on Saturday, May 5, for food, games, music and fun. A large number of Soldiers Home residents mingled with numerous families from the community in this annual ritual that kicks off the warm-weather season at the Home. Rainy weather didn’t dampen spirits, as attendees moved beneath the big tent when the weather worsened and listened to the rocking blues of Nobody’s Business. We are grateful to all the volunteers who helped with this event, and we thank the residents and staff of the Soldiers Home for once again opening the gates to the community. We can’t wait until next time!
