Saloon NIght with Friends

saloon5.We had a fabulous Saloon Night this month! Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC resident Waymon Lucas Jr. provided musical entertainment at the Defender’s Inn on the Home campus. The music encouraged several folks to hit the dance floor! As usual, Friends of the Soldiers Home provided the food, the drinks and the “friends” to enjoy the evening with residents. Everybody had a great time! Next Saloon Night — Tuesday evening, June 7. Happy Hour, Saloon NIght with Friends

saloon4Happy Hour and Saloon Night are two great nights each month when Friends of the Soldiers Home “invades” our veteran residents with food, drink, fun and above all, companionship. At the recent Happy Hour, resident extraordinaire Ray returned to his duties as our DJ. We had a nice mix of older and younger residents. The Nam Nights always enter into a fascinating discussion with residents and this night was no exception. A handful of World War II veterans joined us! One week after Happy Hour, it was a Super Saloon Night in the Defender’s Inn as volunteers and residents mingled to the soothing saxophone sounds of Herb Spice and pianist Collin Chambers. A special guest appearance at the event by Washington Wizards cheerleaders certainly brightened everyone’s spirits with their cheer and good will. Regular Saloon Night attendees enjoyed the pizza and beverages. Remember, you can join us at these events! Write volunteerfriendsofsoldiers (at) gmail (dot) com to learn more.

Saloon1Geneva Renee is always a hit when she performs on behalf of Friends of the Soldiers Home at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-D.C. This was particularly true Tuesday night, when a big crowd of Home residents at Defenders Inn on campus and several Friends volunteers enjoyed Renee’s singing. The event was extra special because Geneva was joined by a guest vocalist, B. Jackson Caesar. Some residents danced while others sang or hummed along to the tunes they knew quite well. Friends purchased drinks and pizza to complete the fun-time atmosphere. Thank you volunteers and donors for making the monthly Saloon Nights possible! The next Saloon Night is March 1. Write volunteerfriendsofsoldiers@gmail.com to be part of it!

Musical performances, Saloon NIght with Friends

Saloon nightOctober’s Saloon Night might well be considered the best one yet.  We had over 55 residents show up for two entertainment groups.  The evening kicked off with Resident Waymon Lucas playing the guitar and singing, and then halfway through the evening, our surprise guest performers the Georgetown Phantoms stopped by for some acapella fun.  They were so entertaining they received a standing ovation at the end of the night!  Residents and volunteers alike were transfixed by all the songs, including crowd favorite “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough”.

The short video below highlights the Georgetown Phantoms.

July’s Saloon Night was a blast with Alan Bjerga playing guitar and singing everyone’s favorite: patriotic tunes!  Residents had a ball singing along to sheet music and standing tall for the National Anthem.  This is the third year Alan has played for the residents in July and he’s always a huge hit!  This month the weather was perfect for sitting both outside and in!

Wow – what a fun night at this month’s Saloon Night!  Betty Entzminger serenaded us and the lucky residents who attended got a sneak preview of the food coming to 201 Uphsur St in only two weeks!!  Slash Run will be opening later this month and will have burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and a full bar.  Co-owners Gordon Banks and Jackie Greenbaum set up a burger bar with all the fixins at Saloon Night and later set up an ice cream sundae bar!  As if all this wasn’t enough, they announced a 15% discount for all residents of the AFRH at their new restaurant!  We are all excited about spending time with residents and neighbors once Slash Run opens!  Many thanks again to co-owners Jackie and Gordon and all the volunteers who made this night so special!

Cinco de Mayo was a festive celebration at this month’s Saloon Night! Friends and veterans mingled over mariachi music and margaritas! We also had tacos, chips, salsa, and guacamole from El Togoroz. There was a particularly strong showing from some of our female veterans this month and of course all the regulars were there, too! Next month we’re expecting burgers from the coming-soon on Upshur St burger joint called Slash Run, which will open across from the gates of the Home in mid-June!

Saloon NIght with Friends, spring

Wow – nothing like March Madness – Soldier’s Home Style!  The fierce energy at the Duke-Wisconsin NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Match had nothing on Saloon Night Trivia  this month!  The April theme was, appropriately, college sports, and it was neck-and-neck as the teams battled it out for first place.  In the end, team “College Basketball Sucks” (see picture!) pulled out the win and much fun was had by all.  Join us next month for a Cinco de Mayo celebration and live music!

Saloon NIght with Friends

The Friends of the Soldier’s Home ushered in the month of Presidents with a rousing round of Presidential Pub Trivia at our monthly Saloon Night. Just like the Superbowl, Trivia came down to the wire with a two-way tie for first place between Team Stagehounds and Team Snowflakes. After a grueling tie-breaker, it was Team Snowflakes that brought home the win! Everyone enjoyed the food this month – special thanks to our friends at the Hitching Post for the donated fried chicken! See you next month for some Mardi Gras Madness!

saloon6he first Saloon Night of 2015 was a hit. Beautiful singing and wonderful volunteers who came in to the Defender’s Inn on the DC Soldiers Home campus made everyone forget about how cold it was outside on Jan. 6. This marked the 20th Saloon Night, which has become one of the most popular programs Friends of the Soldiers Home offers — for both residents and volunteers. Mark your calendars: Feb. 3 is the next Saloon Night, and a great time is sure to be had by all at a “super” time of year. Write at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail.com if you want to help!
