Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers had a great time bowling this week with residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home! We help residents to and from the lanes and bowl with those who need assistance. We do this the third Tuesday evening of each month. The Home has nice lanes and volunteers get an opportunity to roll a few balls as well! To join us on May 15, drop a line to the FOSH volunteer coordinator, Lori Lincoln, at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.
The garden provides AFRH Residents and individuals from the surrounding neighborhoods an opportunity to garden, build friendships, and have fun. The Friends of the Soldiers Home manages the garden in partnership with the AFRH.
Joining the garden entails a volunteer commitment of two hours per month and annual dues of $25 for a 200 square foot plot or $35 for 400 square feet (for experienced gardeners, subject to availability). Plots are for growing annual flowers and vegetables for household use.
Volunteer duties include helping AFRH Residents to garden and helping with events for the Residents as well as mowing, weeding, and mulching the common areas of the garden.

It was great to see the community and Soldiers Home-DC residents making connections at last night’s Happy Hour! Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers have been heading to Happy Hour for years, always the last Tuesday of each month. Pete from Nam Knights told a few jokes along with the main entertainment of the night — Home staffer Carol, who shared witticisms and stories and held contests. The incomparable resident Ray spun the tunes for all to enjoy. We would love to see you at an upcoming event! During our first bowling event of 2018, eleven volunteers – some new, and some returning from long hiatuses – had a lot of fun helping residents enjoy themselves and win prizes! The Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC bowling lanes once again proved to be a great place for residents and community volunteers to form friendships. Volunteers loved helping residents bowl, and veterans on the winning team (where 120 was the lowest score!) chose beautiful hand-knit blankets as prizes. Do you want to join Friends of the Soldiers Home for a great time on bowling night? We always gather the third Tuesday evening of the month. It was a wonderful evening celebrating Halloween at the Soldiers Home this week. There were so many residents in costume! There was the Tooth Fairy; Lady Bug in deep conversation, and great chats with residents and volunteers. Come and join us in November as we move into the holiday season!
There are lots of opportunities to volunteer. Check out our web pages for upcoming events and drop a line to our volunteer coordinator, Lori Lincoln, at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers for bowling once each month — and we sure had fun at the September and October sessions! On Sept. 19, Geico sponsored the bowling event and there was a huge turnout of helpers from nearby Catholic University. On Oct. 17, we had another great group of young people that made the evening special. We want to thank everyone for helping out on bowling night! Our next bowling event will be Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 6pm at Soldiers Home DC. If you can join us, drop a line to FOSH Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com and she will tell you how it is done. Thanks to Lori for these great photos of our last two bowling sessions!
Once each week, Friends of the Soldiers Home organizes volunteers for the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. On Thursday, Aug. 10 we played Happy Birthday Jingo and recognized the many birthdays being celebrated during the month. With the exception of one game, the lively crew at the back table took home all the money! Jingo always happens the second Thursday evening of each month. Our next game is Sept. 14 — mark it on your calendar and join us! Drop a line to volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Friends of the Soldiers Home and Nam Knights Capital Chapter love to partner in volunteering for Happy Hour on the last Tuesday evening of the month at Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. As the photos from the last event show, we finally got a summer opportunity to enjoy Happy Hour on the rooftop of the Scott Building! We were all so glad to be out there, watching the retiring sun, enjoying the breeze, the conversation, the music and so much more. Happy Hour on the rooftop! It couldn’t be better. There’s so much we do with the residents, and for the residents – come and join us. To be part of the fun at the next Happy Hour, write Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Tuesday Aug. 15 is the next Friends of the Soldiers Home bowling night — join us! You can see from these photos of the July bowling night how much fun we have. This is a wonderful way to give back to veterans, as we volunteers assist residents who would not be able to use the bowling alley on their own. Plus, you will get a chance to roll some balls of your own at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington alley.
If you would like to join us for this early evening event, write FOSH Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com
